You can take all the supplements and buy all the skincare, but if your diet isn’t in tune with your body, there are subtle signs that can delay any sort of progress. It’s a big part of a clean lifestyle so when I first heard about food sensitivity tests, I knew it was something I needed to do. It’s not the cheapest so it was a matter of when it fit into my budget. I’ve always had minor reactions to foods I ate that made me question if there were things I should be avoiding. Luckily, my husband won a free one at this year’s SXSW Wellness Expo so I was finally able to test it out!
The difference between an allergy and an intolerance:
Food Allergies – Develop when you’re born and usually comes with an immediate reaction to a food. The smallest trace of these foods can become life-threatening. Common items are milk, peanuts, shellfish and eggs.
Food Sensitivities aka Food Intolerance – Develop at any age and these reactions can take hours and sometimes days which makes it hard to pinpoint what could be causing it. Symptoms like headaches, joint pain, stomach cramps, tiredness, eczema, weight gain and skin reactions. Common items are milk, gluten, eggs and even certain fruits and vegetables.
When I started learning more about clean beauty, I started to wonder more about clean eating. I couldn’t begin to imagine what foods would show up on my results. I was experiencing certain reactions and couldn’t figure out what exactly it was from and relieved that I was finally going to know the culprit.
The Nancy Drew in me wanted to investigate.
While I was at work, I met a reporter who told me that her test showed that gluten was a high reaction for her. She went gluten-free and immediately noticed a difference. She was less bloated and the skin rashes that she’d experienced completely went away.
I was shocked to see that Egg (both egg whites and egg yolk) + Green Peas gave me the biggest reactions. I live in Texas and Texans love our breakfast tacos. My favorite happened to be potato and egg…
Reactions ranged from Severe (red), High (orange), Moderate (yellow), Mild (sea green) and No Reaction (dark green). I’ve experienced almost all egg reactions, but moved on about my day and didn’t think twice that this was even an issue.
I found this to be SO interesting because it wasn’t until about a year ago that I noticed food was making a bigger impact than before. Just last year, I went to the doctor because I was experiencing allergies more than ever and she told me I had nasal inflammation likely due to pollen. Something I never had as a kid. I’d go through more acne breakouts, occasional stomach cramps, inflammation, joint pain, etc.
Luckily, I hate green peas (and chick peas aka hummus) so I wasn’t sad about those! My mom is lactose intolerant so cow’s milk didn’t entirely surprise me. It’s not the best for you so forcing myself to choose substitutes like Almond Milk or Soy isn’t the worst thing in the world. I could go without lentils and sunflower seeds especially since lentils often made me feel super bloated.
It’s been two weeks since I got the results and my eggless life is already shaping up. I haven’t had any breakouts so far and zero stomach cramps. I personally tried the KBMO Diagnostics FIT Test ($300), at a dental office of all places, and would highly recommend either this one or EverlyWell’s Food Sensitivity Test ($160).
Wish these were more affordable, but if you have even the slightest gut feeling (no pun intended) that you’re sensitive to foods then you should! It’s just not so fun to prick your finger 😉
